There are trends, patterns, and common experiences, and we can use this knowledge to our advantage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wyseminds.com\/\">Wyseminds<\/a> combined the lived experience of entrepreneurs who have grown their own businesses with established growth theories (such as <a href=\"https:\/\/evodiokaltenecker.com\/organizational-life-cycle\/#:~:text=According%20to%20Adizes%20%5B1%5D%2C,the%20life%20cycle%20of%20organizations.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Adizes\u2019 Organisations Lifecycle<\/a>s, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindtools.com\/pages\/article\/newLDR_87.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greiner\u2019s Growth Curve<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/1983\/05\/the-five-stages-of-small-business-growth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stages of Small Business Growth<\/a>) &#8211; and we identified the most important phases of business growth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>5 phases of business growth<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These phases are; Forming, Survival, Establishing Ground, Seeing Success, and Keeping Growth. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3496\" src=\"https:\/\/wyseminds.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Screenshot-2022-05-11-at-21.45.34.png\" alt=\"Wyseminds Growth Phases\" width=\"1288\" height=\"806\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how do you know what phase you are in? Well, each phase is distinguished without any measure to do with size, money, or how long you\u2019ve been in business for &#8211; instead, it\u2019s all about your position in the market.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forming<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this phase you\u2019re just getting started. You (and maybe just a couple of other key partners) are developing your first product\/service, and you\u2019re dedicated to proving the need for your new and unique offering.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Survival<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this phase you properly begin to sell. You need to make this work, and as you\u2019re saying yes to every sales opportunity you\u2019re also beginning to improve your offering based on customer feedback.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Establishing Ground<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve survived, and now is the time to grow! In this phase you begin to deliver your offering at a larger scale, perhaps with added extras, and your team is developing more defined roles and functions to support this.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seeing Success<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This phase has 3 parts. It begins with a period where you are in a kind of holding pattern &#8211; called \u2018<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Progress<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 &#8211; where you are well established, with good returns and a healthy market position. But if you want to grow further from here, then it\u2019s usually a choice between two directions;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consolidation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is where you decide to embed and enhance your offering in your current market. This is a great choice if your existing customer market is able to support your <a href=\"https:\/\/wyseminds.com\/wtf-are-growth-phases\/\">growth ambitions<\/a>, especially if you want to meet their needs as they change over time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Replicating Growth<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is where you decide to use your existing success as a platform to launch your offering into new markets, territories, or customer groups.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping Growth<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the time you reach this phase you are well established &#8211; but having had the reward of many growth moments, the future direction for your business may be a little harder to define, and finding or creating growth opportunities may feel more challenging.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>So what?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ok, that\u2019s interesting enough\u2026but how does this help?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well different growth phases have different needs. If we understand the patterns of growth we can understand what would best support us for the phase we are in to avoid unnecessary conflict, minimise wasted effort, and to predict the most effective route to take.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take decision making as an example; how you make decisions as a business will be very different in the keeping growth phase compared to how things were years before in the forming or survival phase &#8211; because your needs have changed, and different circumstances need a different approach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same principle is true of lots of <a href=\"https:\/\/wyseminds.com\/wtf-are-capabilities\/\">organisational capabilities<\/a> &#8211; the functions, structures, and skills you need to operate effectively. There are lots of these capabilities (things like project management, financial management, change management, etc) and they\u2019re all useful and important\u2026but\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026 some capabilities have a much bigger impact on your growth than others, if you align them to your growth phase. And those are:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your decision making process,\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your organisational structure, and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your value creation process.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What we want to see is that these particular capabilities match your current growth phase. Imagine if your decision-making process was so formal and rigid in the early phases of rapid growth that you can\u2019t make the quick decisions you need to respond to new opportunities. Equally, imagine you\u2019re a large and established company, but all the decisions are being made by just the founder like it was back when you had just started up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbl.net\/insights\/articles\/5-organization-misalignments-that-are-hurting-your-business\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">misalignment<\/a>. It\u2019s one of the reasons why businesses struggle, because they have functions, processes, or skills that are over-, or under-, developed for their current needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The more you align these capabilities for the phase you are in, the more seamless and efficient your business will be, and the more effortlessly you will move into your next growth phase.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Now what?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how do I know what my capabilities should look like for my current growth phase?
