In this article we\u2019ll consider the importance of taking with you only what you need on <\/span>your growth journey<\/span><\/a>. The ideas, people and processes you set out as an entrepreneur will evolve as your business grows and objectives change. Climbing up unhindered means putting some things down.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a metaphor for seamless company growth, I\u2019ve discussed the \u2018Mount Everest mentality\u2019 <\/span>before<\/span><\/a> with the Wyseminds community. However, it comes up so often in the conversations I have with entrepreneurs, that I really feel it warrants exploring further here.<\/span><\/p>\n

The higher you climb, the better the view<\/b><\/h2>\n

I love exploring the great outdoors, but I\u2019m certainly no climber. I have been stuck on <\/span>Spanky\u2019s Ladder<\/span><\/a> in Whistler in the past, much to the irritation of the stream of powder-hunters piling up behind me. But in these moments straddling mountains, parallels with entrepreneurs struggling to overcome steep obstacles can be found. Slogging onwards, weighed down by the heavy daily grind and carrying too much on our shoulders. <\/span>Overwhelmed<\/span><\/a> by what\u2019s still to come, so much so that we fail to stop to enjoy the view and celebrate how far we\u2019ve already come.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"Imagine that you\u2019ve had a dream since childhood, one great adventure that refuses to leave you. You dream of climbing <\/span>Mount Everest<\/span><\/a>, one of the highest and toughest peaks in the world. You know you can\u2019t achieve this dream alone, so you\u2019ve assembled a team of experts and bought all the best equipment. A <\/span>lot<\/span><\/i> of equipment \u2013 you\u2019re going to need that team to help you carry it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Onwards and upwards<\/b><\/h2>\n

Planning and preparation complete, you set off on your journey. After all the anticipation it feels great to be finally underway. The foothills are tough, but you\u2019re determined to succeed and so you press on, thankful for all the hard work that\u2019s brought you to this stage. Backpack full, heart bursting with pride.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"There are <\/span>four camps<\/span><\/a> on the Mount Everest ascent, the last of which is rather chillingly titled <\/span>The Death Zone<\/span><\/a>. It is here that climbers regroup and prepare for the monumental final challenge ahead. They must take only what is needed on the journey to the top \u2013 superfluous kit and nagging doubts will only weigh climbers down on their last push. At this point, strategic and decisive choices are required if the journey is to culminate in success.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reviewing progress to refocus on success<\/b><\/h2>\n

The comparison of these four Mount Everest camps with milestones on your own <\/span>growth journey<\/span><\/a> as an entrepreneur is clear. At key stages of your personal development and business success you must also stop and reassess where you are, where you are headed and what you need to take with you in order to get there.
