It\u2019s doing something different in a way that gives space to everyone to do the best job possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/askthemanager.com\/2021\/01\/all-hands-on-deck\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all-hands-on-deck<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> approach also generates trust among team members at all levels which creates a sense of togetherness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Project this and project that<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Julie has extensive experience of how to take the enthusiasm that\u2019s present in the crisis room and put it to work motivating an entire workforce in day-to-day operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She started the SpecSavers business in the Netherlands and expanded it into the global success story it is today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe were brilliant in times of crisis,\u201d she tells podcast host Mel Loizou. \u201cWe\u2019d make up names \u2013 project this or project that. In times of crisis there were no job hierarchies. All staff, no matter what their job function, were working towards a common goal.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it\u2019s that common goal that Julie says forms the essential element that underpins everything \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wyseminds.com\/values-and-purpose-airy-fairy-corporate-fluff-or-a-force-for-business-growth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">purpose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Blame game or game changer?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without purpose \u2013 in life and in work \u2013 you\u2019re left wondering what it\u2019s all about on the expressway to apathy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In contrast, when people are unified behind a central goal and get the chance to contribute to it equally, there\u2019s far more a sense of collaboration and celebration as one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWithout this, you\u2019ll have division and unrest when something goes wrong. Everyone blames everyone else.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When purpose is owned equally by all, the blame game is transformed into a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.hightail.com\/tips-for-quitting-the-blame-game-and-becoming-a-game-changer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">game changer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one that benefits your business for the better.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Purpose and the age-old search for meaning\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The search for meaning has preoccupied great thinkers throughout history, with the general consensus being it\u2019s a natural byproduct of purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purpose \u2013 a shared objective that everyone can get behind \u2013 creates unity and collaboration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA person with a clear purpose will make progress, even on the roughest road,\u201d said 19th century philosopher <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nl.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Carlyle_(schrijver)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thomas Carlyle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cA person with no purpose will make no progress, even on the smoothest road.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast-forward 200 years and nothing has changed in this respect. In Julie\u2019s early days of expanding SpecSavers in Europe, she navigated repeated ups and downs that drained her. Unable to step back for fear of everything going wrong, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wyseminds.com\/about-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she was exhausted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and didn\u2019t know where to turn next.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At that time, part of the strategy was celebrating individual aspects of the business, like record weeks. But this only affected specific teams so was not achieving the unity and shared vision she wanted for all 1,700 staff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She needed to find something everyone could rally behind \u2013 a company-wide purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So she replaced record weeks with \u201cthe likelihood that a customer will return in two years\u201d in the hope it would create a \u201cunified celebration\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decision paid off.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Owning the crisis room equally<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All employees, no matter what level, now had a goal that held meaning for them and their daily work. Without realising it, Julie had translated the energy that comes from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wyseminds.com\/the-stars-were-aligned\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crisis leadership<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> throughout the entire organisation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe were owning the crisis room equally; it just happened to be the company,\u201d she told the podcast. \u201cThere wasn\u2019t the blame culture of \u2018it\u2019s your fault, it\u2019s my fault\u2019 anymore. It was \u2018what are we doing as a team\u2019 because we celebrated as one. There were no individual celebrations\u2026. we didn\u2019t need them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within 12 months, she had positioned the company into a strong enough place to be able to let go and wean herself away from the small stuff. There was a healthy brand with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colevillelondon.com\/blog\/finding-your-personal-purpose\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clear purpose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that everyone shared which freed her to step forward into a new phase where there was space to breathe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMeetings now had a cross functional view where everybody contributed towards the common goal.
