3 top tips to help women entrepreneurs dilute digital chaos
And while there’s no denying the many benefits of digital, it appears the opposite of these predictions has in fact happened, especially for women trying to run a business.
The 24/7, always-on culture means entrepreneurs are now wasting up to 21.8 hours of their time on low-value tasks – digital noise like emails and newsletters. The average business leader spends 72 hours per week working, while the average person receives 121 emails every day!
A whole industry has emerged dedicated to helping people to slow down, notice things, be mindful and create space amid the digital chaos.
While we don’t want to add to the noise, we do want to share 3 tips for women founders that could help you feel more in control and less swamped by what
Tip 1: Decide what you need to know
Learning is for life, not just the classroom
There’s so much out there, it can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re chasing your tail each day trying to grow your company.
But learning is a lifelong lesson and there’s gold to be struck if you know where best to look.
Tip 1 is to decide on what it is you need to learn. No deleting. No decluttering. Simply deciding.
For the woman founder, that’s likely to mean topics that fall into the world of business – nurturing the right mindset, financial know-how, team management tips and so on. But you also need to take account of your personal development, which as a leader, will run in tandem with your company’s growth. Topics that fall into categories like taking a break and reflecting on your own progress, as well as that of your company, will also be very relevant.
A healthy relationship with your inbox can only come after you make that decision. Skip this step and you won’t solve the problem – you’ll just swap one set of distractions for another.
Tip 2: Identify how you learn best
Everyone has different styles and preferences and tip 2 is to identify the way you learn best.
Then you can start choosing the right input and tools to support your learning. Being selective with what you give your attention to in the 21st century of information overload is not a luxury – it’s survival.
Choose what’s worth your time. If you’ve decided you can do 10 minutes a day or 20 minutes a week of learning, stick to it. When a newsletter or email lands ask
- Will this help me grow my business?
- Is it focused, practical and clear?
- Does it speak to me as a business owner?
Create a small, personalised learning system that fuels growth, not noise, in the form of a toolbelt you can turn to whenever you need. Limit your learning sources to
- One or two newsletters (content by people with expertise in your field is always useful!)
- A podcast you can tune in to now and again
- A saved folder of one or two key reads each week.
Tip 3: Unsubscribe with intent
Once you’ve decided what you need to learn and how best you learn, it should be easy to see what doesn’t fit and easy to stay loyal to the few things that do.
Tip 3 is about calling time on an inbox that steals energy by getting familiar with the act of ‘unsubscribing’.
Hitting ‘unsubscribe’ is not about being ruthless – it’s about being ready to start creating the daily learning toolbelt.
If content is practical, forward-looking and tailored to your niche, there’s no need to get rid of it. Only let go of what drains you. Keep what fuels you.
Learning to differentiate is important.
